Many people imagine holiness as a kind of escape. The more spiritual a person becomes, they suppose, the less ordinary, bodily, human, and natural he must be. Prayer is pictured as flight from human life. Grace is treated as if it were a divine force that replaces nature with something alien. To belong to God, the person must become less creaturely, less embodied, less bound to the real conditions of human life.
A Distinction
Grace does not destroy nature
It heals it, perfects it, and does so without erasing it.
